How Much Car Insurance Do You Really Need in Texas?
“What’s the minimum I can get away with?” is one of the most common questions we hear about car insurance. It’s a fair question — but the better one is “what actually protects me if something goes wrong?” Here’s how to think about it in Texas.
The legal minimum: 30/60/25
Texas law requires every driver to carry liability coverage of at least:
- $30,000 for bodily injury per person
- $60,000 for bodily injury per accident
- $25,000 for property damage
That’s what those three numbers mean. It’s enough to register your car and stay legal — but it has two big limitations.
Why the minimum often isn’t enough
First, liability only covers the other guy. It pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. It does nothing for your own vehicle or your own injuries.
Second, the limits are low. A serious accident — a totaled late-model truck, an ER visit, or worse — can blow past $30,000 in a hurry. Anything above your limit comes out of your pocket, including your savings and potentially future wages.
The coverages worth adding
For most drivers, “full coverage” is the smarter target:
- Collision — repairs your car after an accident, regardless of fault
- Comprehensive — theft, hail, fire, flooding, animal strikes
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist — protects you when the other driver has little or no insurance (and plenty of Texas drivers do)
- Medical payments / PIP — medical costs for you and your passengers
Consider a personal umbrella
If you have assets to protect, a personal umbrella adds $1 million or more of liability above your auto policy for a few hundred dollars a year — cheap insurance against a lawsuit that exceeds your limits.
The carrier matters as much as the limits
Here’s what surprises people most: the same coverage costs very different amounts from one carrier to the next. That’s the whole point of using an independent agent — we shop your exact profile across 15+ carriers and find the best price for the protection you actually want.
